A court hearing was held on Nov. 12 to determine the fate of the conservatorship overseeing the life of singer and performer Britney Spears. For almost 14 years, one of America’s top-selling performing artists had no freedom to make any of her own decisions.
Britney Spears, 39, was granted freedom at the end of the Nov. 12 court hearing. The ruling ends the 14-year-long conservatorship that Spears was placed under amidst her mental health struggles. For the first time since 2008, Spears has the freedom to make her own choices, such as using her car, owning an ATM card, or, if she wishes, carrying a child. Spears can finally live whatever life she desires.
Spears was 26 when the conservatorship began and spent the entirety of her 30s under its control. Her freedom was granted just before her 40th birthday, giving her another milestone to commemorate.
A conservatorship refers to “the appointment of a guardian or a protector by a judge to manage the financial affairs and/or daily life of another person due to old age or physical or mental limitations.” Under these terms, a person under a conservatorship is considered a “conservatee.”
A major reason fans and fellow celebrities advocated for Spears’ freedom was because they felt Spears’ situation didn’t justify her being under a conservatorship, as she has released albums and gone on tours since the conservatorship was instated, proving she can take care of herself and work.
Judge Brenda Penny ruled that the conservatorship be terminated in a less than 45-minute court hearing. Penny faced no opposition to her decision.
Spears’ parents, Lynn Spears, 66, and Jamie Spears, 69, who wasn’t recently removed as conservator of his daughter’s estate in a previous hearing, were also supportive of the decision, according to their lawyers.
Fans, unsurprisingly, rejoiced unanimously at the news. Tears of joy and relief were heard outside the courtroom as fans anxiously awaited to learn the verdict of the trial.
Celebrities have been vocally supportive of Spears following the verdict and during her time under the conservatorship.
Entertainer Lady Gaga, 35, took to Instagram to share her support for Spears.
Britney Spears’ sister, Jamie Lynn Spears, 30, has yet to comment publicly about the conservatorship since her sister was freed. Jamie Lynn Spears has been under scrutiny by fans due to her silence regarding her sister’s conservatorship, with some even alleging she was profiting from the conservatorship.
Britney Spears took to Twitter to celebrate her freedom.
However, Britney Spears’ court battles may not be over yet. It is still unknown whether the singer will pursue a lawsuit against her father.
In an Instagram poll conducted over the past weekend, 67% voted “Britney Spears should file a lawsuit against her father,” while 33% voted “No, let her heal.” In total, 12 people voted for Spears to file a lawsuit against her father, and six people voted for her not to.
Lindsey Passin of Long Island, a 20-year-old Junior at Suffolk County Community College majoring in interior design, voted for Spears to pursue her father legally.
Passin expanded her position further in an interview after the results of the polls came in.
“He deserves the exact amount of pain he put her through,” Passin said.
Zara Zulquar of Long Island, 22, with a B.S. in marketing from Adelphi University, continuing her education towards her M.S., voted “No, let her heal.”
Zulquar was contacted after the results of the polls came in when she expressed her views in an interview.
“I think that she needs time to heal, but she also needs to get his a** because who knows if he flees?” Zulquar said.
“There could be a period of time where her case may no longer be as relevant if there is a delay, but she needs a break to live her life the way she wants it with her kids,” Zulquar said.
Regardless of what Spears does with her newfound freedom, the important thing is that she is free to do what she wants, and any choice she makes will be her own.
