The CBS Soap Opera Beyond the Gates leads in on-screen representation for people of color, unsurprisingly so given its predominantly African-American cast. Out of the remaining four, ABC’s General Hospital ranks as the Daytime Drama with the highest combined total of 15 contract and recurring performers of color. Meanwhile, CBS’s The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful have the fewest combined total of performers of color, with nine and eight each, respectively. Interestingly, data shows that in terms of overall representation, CBS Soaps are doing better. Both soaps are tied after sister soap Beyond the Gates for having the highest number of performers of color to appear on screen in July.

Jibre hordges - Quantrell Colbert/CBS

Beyond the Gates: On the first soap opera with a predominantly African-American cast in over 30 years, contract actor Jibre Hordges (Jacob Hawthorne) was the performer of color who appeared the most in July, with 14 out of the 19 original episodes during the month. Recurring actors Ellie Wang (Caroline Lee), Aleq Bey (Jim Price), Camryn Jade (Jessica), and Ny’Jal Mosley (Officer Mills) were the performers of color who appeared on Beyond the Gates the least amount of times over the month, with only one episode each. There were several notable decreases and increases in screen time throughout July. Ambyr Michelle (Eva Thomas) and Marquita Goings (Hayley Lawson) appeared in only six episodes each, while Trisha Mann-Grant (Dana Thomas) appeared in four episodes, making her the contract actress of color who appeared in the fewest episodes during the month. These figures are lower than the amounts for recurring actor Jaden Lucas Miller (Tyrell Richardson), who appeared in 10 episodes, and recurring actress Najah Jackson (Samantha Richardson), who appeared in nine episodes, despite not being on contract, and their characters have only recently begun to receive some development in their storylines.

Contract actress Murielle Hilaire (Daphne Rose) and recurring actor Dan Martin (Deputy Chief Baker) tied as the performers of color with the fewest appearances on B&B in July, with only one episode. Meanwhile, contract actor Delon de Metz (Zende Forrester Dominguez) didn’t appear on the daytime drama in July. Adrian Anchondo - ABC

General Hospital: On the longest-running American Daytime Drama in production, contract actors Adrian Anchondo (Marco Rios) and Brooke Kerr (Dr. Portia Robinson) tied as the most screen time among performers of color on the longest-running American daytime drama under production in July, appearing in 10 of the 22 episodes. This is an impressive achievement for Anchondo, who only joined the soap a few months ago, although not surprising considering his storyline is linked to Maurice Bernard’s Sonny Corinthos, who has been at the center of the show since his introduction in 1993. Several actors experienced significant decreases in screen time or didn’t appear at all. Contract actress Tanisha Harper (Jordan Ashford) appeared in only three episodes, tying her with recurring actresses Vernee Watson (Stella Henry) and Nazneen Contractor (ADA Turner), the latter of whom joined the series just a few months ago. Recurring actress Lydia Look (Selina Wu) appeared in only one episode; recurring actors Robert Gossett (Marshall Ashford), Cassandra James (Dr. Terry Randolph), Marc Samuel (Felix DuBois), and Parry Shen (Brad Cooper) didn’t appear in July. None of these characters have had major storylines in several months or years.
